It is difficult to say where Gonzalo Aponte's style comes from. We asked him and this is what we got:

"It comes from where 'it all comes from'. If the sculptor was himself created, then what he creates is not his creation but the creation of his Creator. I am not the Creator, I am just the middle man. My job is to 'eliminate the middle man' - eliminate my own pre-conceived ideas of what the creation ought to be, eliminate my fears, my resentments, my prejudging. If I succeed, the Creation will then be perfect and even I will be seeing it for the first time."

Born on October 19, 1951 in a coconut grove overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Gonzalo Andrés Aponte was raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He studied in New England, and lived in New York during the artistic revival of the early 1970's. His travels worldwide exposed him to an amalgamation of culture, language and tradition. His art objects represent the culmination of this experience. Versatile in various artistic expressions of the heart, his sculpture embodies an earthy perspective of the human form. While his lines are clean and simple, his objects emit an intense aura and transport you to a unique magical emotion.

On March 3, 2003 Gonzalo Aponte passed away while traveling to his Old San Juan studio, The Free Studio.
